Matakana Guide
Gathered by Natasha of Matakana Stays
Matakana Farmers Market
On Saturdays, the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market is just a short stroll down the street from the condo, making it an easy and enjoyable start to your weekend.
Wander through vibrant stalls filled with fresh local produce, artisan foods, and handcrafted goods, all set to the sound of live music.
Grab a coffee, sample your way through the market, and soak up the relaxed village atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to experience the heart of Matakana at your own pace.
Kayaking To Brekkie
If you’re staying at the sauna and spa cabin, high tide opens up a special way to explore the estuary by kayak.
Take the two kayaks provided and wander down to the Point Wells boat ramp, then paddle out toward The Farmer’s Daughter for a coffee and quick brekkie at the far end near the causeway. This gentle adventure is best timed from two hours before high tide to one hour after, when the tide is in.
For a shorter paddle, you can explore around Stingray Island or cruise over to the Big Omaha Wharf. It’s a peaceful, uniquely Matakana experience right from your doorstep.
Explore Goat Island
A visit to Goat Island Marine Reserve is a must while you’re staying in the area, just a short drive from Matakana.
The crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, or simply floating above schools of fish in this protected marine reserve. Bring a picnic and spend time exploring the beach, rocky edges, and walking tracks nearby. It’s an easy, relaxed day out that offers a unique glimpse into New Zealand’s coastal marine life.
Omaha Beach
Omaha Beach is a stunning stretch of coastline perfect for a classic beach day. From the sauna and spa cabin, you can even bike your way there, making the journey part of the experience.
The long, golden sand is ideal for swimming, surfing, or simply relaxing by the water. A concrete coastal path runs alongside the beach, perfect for an easy walk or ride with uninterrupted ocean views. For something more active, take on the nearby Quarry Steps for a short climb and rewarding views over the bay.
Recharge in a Wood Fire Mobile Sauna
Recharge with the warmth of a wood-fired sauna, whether you’re after a quick heat at its home base or a more scenic session by the water.
It will be set up in beautiful spots like Point Wells Riverside or Matheson’s Bay (just enquire for locations and availability). Step into the heat, then cool off and take in the surroundings—it’s simple, grounding, and deeply relaxing. Perfect after a day of exploring, or as an experience in its own right.
